Belmond Trip to Peru: Lima, Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu

If you’re curious about what a Belmond trip to Peru might look like, this itinerary offers a clear starting point. Peru works beautifully for milestone trips, food-focused travel, and immersive cultural experiences. After celebrating my own 10th anniversary here, I can confidently recommend it as a destination that stays with you long after you return home.

This sample itinerary highlights Peru’s most rewarding regions while pairing them with Belmond’s signature properties and well-paced experiences.

Days 1–2: Discover Lima’s Culinary and Cultural Highlights

Start your journey in Lima, a coastal city where world-class cuisine and incredible history intersect.

Stay: Belmond Miraflores Park – This hotel feels refined without being formal. Public spaces lean warm and residential, while the rooms feel light and classic. Thoughtful details, from bath amenities to pillow spray, add to the experience. The rooftop pool and breakfast restaurant offer sweeping views of the Pacific, and Tragaluz on the ground floor delivers creative, well-executed meals.

Suggested Experiences in Lima:

First, dive into Lima’s food culture. I recommend a private chauffeured food tour that introduces ceviche, lomo saltado, and regional specialties. Alternatively, reserve a full dining experience at Central, known for its ingredient-driven tasting menus. Maido and La Mar are also excellent options, depending on your preferences.

Next, explore the Plaza de Armas, where colonial landmarks surround the square. From there, visit the Lima Art Museum for a concise overview of Peru’s artistic history.

Then, step back even further in time at Huaca Pucllana, a pre-Inca pyramid set right in the city. If you’re interested in something more private, I can also arrange access to Casa de Aliaga, one of the oldest continuously inhabited homes in South America.

Day 3–5: Explore the Sacred Valley

Our Belmond guide had us guessing what these were used for! The answer? They're agricultural terraces in Moray.

Next, contine your Belmond trip to Peru by heading to the Sacred Valley, where landscapes, culture, and Inca history come together.

Stay: Belmond Rio Sagrado – Set along the Urubamba River, this property feels deeply connected to its surroundings. Each room opens to a private patio with mountain views. On-site experiences range from alpaca encounters to spa rituals, while the restaurant highlights ingredients grown on the property or sourced locally.

Suggested Experiences in the Sacred Valley:

Start with Manos de la Comunidad, where artisans demonstrate traditional weaving techniques. This is also the best place to understand alpaca quality before purchasing textiles.

Then, explore Ollantaytambo, an Inca fortress and living village. A knowledgeable guide brings the stonework and engineering to life. Continue to Moray, where circular terraces reveal the Incas’ agricultural innovation.

Afterward, visit the Maras Salt Mines, still harvested by local families using centuries-old methods.

Finally, leave space to slow down. An afternoon by the river with a cocktail often becomes one of the most memorable moments of the trip.

Day 6: Ride the Belmond Hiram Bingham Train to Machu Picchu and Back

Travel to Machu Picchu in style aboard Belmond’s luxurious Hiram Bingham train. With boarding just steps from Rio Sagrado, the journey feels effortless.

On board, you’ll enjoy a gourmet brunch, Peruvian wines, live music, and access to the open-air observation car. Once in Aguas Calientes, a short bus ride brings you to the citadel. A guided visit covers key landmarks, including the Temple of the Sun and the Intihuatana.

Afterward, return to the train for dinner and entertainment before heading back to the Sacred Valley for one final night. If hiking Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain is important to you, I’ll design the timing accordingly.

Day 7–8: End Your Belmond Trip to Peru in Cusco

Your journey ends with relaxed stay in Cusco, the former Inca capital.

Stay: Belmond Palacio Nazarenas – Housed in a former convent, this property blends original Inca stonework with modern comforts. Highlights include Cusco’s only outdoor heated pool and oxygen-enriched guest rooms to aid altitude adjustment. Even spa treatments incorporate the site’s historic drainage systems beneath glass floors.

Suggested Experiences in Cusco:

Begin at the Cusco Cathedral, known for its mix of artistic influences. Then, visit Qorikancha, once the Inca’s most sacred site.

Later, explore Sacsayhuamán, where massive stones fit together without mortar. Finally, wander through San Blas, a neighborhood filled with artisan workshops and quiet streets.

To wrap things up, enjoy a guided Pisco Sour tasting, or try your hand at making one yourself.
